The Caucasian Mountain Dog, also known as the Caucasian Ovtcharka, is the most popular mountain dog in Russia. Originally, this breed was used as a guard dog for sheep in Caucasia. They were then introduced to East Germany in the 1960s where they served as border patrol dogs. Today the Caucasian Mountain Dog is still used as a flock guarding dog and for security purposes.
These dogs have medium sized deep set eyes that give them excellent binocular vision. They have thick, hairy ears for insulation and a substantially, densely feathered coat and tail. The nose is black and prominent among the face. Their legs are long and straight with sizeable paws. Each paw is well padded to handle tough terrain and has hair between the toes to afford them insulation as well as protection. Though they come in a variety of colors, the most common are fawn, tan, pied, and brindle. On average, the males range between 27-30 inches and 100-160 lbs. while females are about 25-28 in. and 80-120 lbs. Some of them are in really large size.

A strong, compact, square, balanced dog. Taking him all around, he is profusely, but not excessively coated , thickset, muscular and able-bodied. These qualities, combined with his agility, fit him for the demanding tasks required of a shepherd's or drover's dog. Therefore, soundness is of the greatest importance. His bark is loud with a distinctive "pot-casse" ring in it.
Height (measured from top of withers to the ground), Dogs: 22 inches (55.8 cm) and upward. Bitches: 21 inches (53.3 cm) and upward.
The Mastiff is a large, massive, symmetrical dog with a well-knit frame. The impression is one of grandeur and dignity. Dogs are more massive throughout. Bitches should not be faulted for being somewhat smaller in all dimensions while maintaining a proportionally powerful structure. A good evaluation considers positive qualities of type and soundness with equal weight.
The Neapolitan Mastiff looks extremely beastly and even vicious in appearance, but this could not be anymore far from the truth as this breed is a very peaceful and gentle dog. Highly protective and fearless when it comes to its family, this dog also extremely intelligent as well. Repetitive training is often not necesary for they are in tune with their handlers wishes. This massive animal is very serious, calm, and quiet unless provoked.
The female Neapolitan Mastiff is usually better suited for families and children due to their less aggressive behavior compared to their male counterpart. Male breeds are more willful, but can be trained to be a great family pet. This breed is not meant for everyone. They must have a dominate owner capable of controlling him properly. This should be established while the dog is young. The Neo tends to drool alot, especially after drinking water or being out in the hot weather. These large dogs require around 8-10 cups a day of feeding, so be prepared to have a few bags in storage for backup.
