What should I do if my child stutters?

ilovechina ilovechina - 18 months ago

Do:

  • Take time to listen to your child without distractions or competition from other family members. Listen to what your child is saying, not how it is being said (ie don't worry about the stutters).
  • Let your child finish what they are saying, don't finish words or sentences for them.
  • Repeat or rephrase what your child says to show that you have understood.
  • Reassure your child if he or she is aware of the stutter and is concerned.
  • Praise your child when he or she is fluent.
  • Encourage your child to slow down and think about what they want to say.
  • Have your child assessed by a Speech Pathologist.

Don't:

  • Draw attention to your child's speech in front of others or put him or her in situations where speech is on display.
  • Interrupt your child's speech or complete sentences for him or her.
  • Criticise your child's speech.
  • Tease your child about their stutter.
  • Let other people (ie friends, parents) make comments or try to correct your child's speech.

Tips for Fluent Speech, Reduce Stuttering / Stammering

ilovechina ilovechina - 18 months ago
  • To swim well, or cycle well, or play piano well, you need even more practice so that it becomes 'automatic'.
  • If you want to be able to talk to your friends, family and teachers easily and fluently without stuttering, you will need lots of practice too.
  • Myour vocal cords, tongue and lips when you talk.
  • You won't have much time to think, you really need to make your new fluent speech skills automatic!

General Reminders

1. Don't rush to speak. It's difficult to do anything well when you rush.

2. Breathe naturally and easily so that you don't run out of air when you talk. Sometimes people try to help and suggest you 'take a deep breath' - don't overdo it!

Tips to help your child

lifehacker lifehacker - 18 months ago

Some of the warning signs that stuttering may become a serious problem:

  • Tension during speech with facial and/or bodily
  • A struggle to get the words out
  • Prolongation of sounds where the child holds a sound too long, for example “It’s mmmmmine”
  • Numerous repetitions of sounds or words
  • A combination of different types of dysfluencies on one word (repeating and prolonging)
  • Fears and avoidance of speech

In seeking early intervention, there are certain things a parent should expect from the consultation:

  • Keeping a journal about what situations seem to increase or decrease stuttering, variations in the time of day or environment, and any other things that you question;
  • Extensive interview with parents
  • One-on-one interaction between the clinician and the child to stimulate conversation through play, talking, video taping, etc.

Some important things that you can do if you think that your child stutters:

  • Provide a supportive environment. Simplify the way you talk to your child.
  • Really listen.
  • Encourage an environment where everyone “takes turns” speaking. Minimize speaking demands.
  • Intervene if siblings tease.
  • Set realistic goals for your child.
  • love and accept your child for everything that he is.
  • Relax with your child’s dysfluencies.
