How to be good with your boss

Every boss wants employees who do their jobs well. But even among highly competent employees, there are distinctions.

Start out by having at least one specific, valid & provable reason why you know this idea won't work.
Provide a suggestion or alternative idea and why.
Begin asking the person questions to help you understand their views on the idea you disagree with.
When they answer, follow up with another question which leads in the direction of your reason for disagreeing.
When you get to the point where you believe failure will occur, ask a final question

Find out what is important to your boss and make it important to you.
Make note of anything that you and your boss have in common.
Agree with your boss, more often than not, without compromising your own values.
Look for opportunities to "make something happen".
Do not throw the racial or the gender card when your boss picks on you for not doing what you were told to do.
Be as supportive as you can in controversial situations, even if you really don't like your boss' behavior.
Respect your boss' time; do not stand at his or her desk chattering away when clearly they are busy.
Make your boss look good.

put your boss's needs at the center of your universe.
Look for and focus on the "best" parts of your boss
focus instead, on trying to understand your boss's work style.
Learning how to read your boss's moods and reactions.
Learn from your boss.
Ask your boss for feedback.
Value your boss's time.
Tie your work, your requests, and your project direction to your boss's and the company's overarching goals.
