How to Train Your Dog to Stop Barking

flyaway flyaway - 2 years ago

Step One

Consider what's making your dog bark. Does he need yard access? Is a cat taunting him through the window? Does he just like the sound of his bark?

Step Two

Check your pet's basic needs: hunger, thirst or elimination. Your pup might be trying to tell you something.

Step Three

Remove your dog's motivation for barking. For example, make a dog door for easy outdoor access or close the shades.

Step Four

Invest in a citronella no-bark collar, which is effective and not cruel; if your dog barks, the collar sprays a small amount of citronella, which dogs dislike.

Step Five

Use positive reinforcement to train your dog to bark on command; this will help him learn how to be quieted on command as well.

Step Six

Say "Good" at the exact instant your pet exhibits good behavior, followed by a reward and plenty of praise.

Step Seven

Consult a board-certified veterinary behaviorist or a pet behaviorist for additional suggestions if all else fails.

Things You'll Need

Steps

Step One

Place the object on the floor and instruct the dog to "get it". Keep directing the dog's attention to the object until he/she looks at it. Once they have looked at the object, reward with praise and/or treat.

Step Two

Repeat step 1 until the dog is regularly looking at the object when you point and use the command.

Step Three

Now the current behaviour is molded into the desired behavior. Start by requiring more and more involvement prior to rewarding/treating the dog. First, make them move their head in that direction prior to rewarding. Then wait until they actually touch the object. Then wait until the pick up the object a few inches off the ground. Finally, wait to reward them until they place the object in your hand.

Step Four

Now switch objects. One very usable object that you should always have with you is the end if the dog's leash. This way, if you ever drop the leash while carrying something, you can have the dog hand it to you without having to put down what you are carrying.

flyaway flyaway - 2 years ago

Things You'll Need

Steps

Step One

Start with your dog sitting next to you on leash. make sure you have your dog under control before you attempt walking with your dog. Dogs pull because when they feel the pressure on the leash they will pull away from you. This is called opposition reflex.

Step Two

As you step off, give your dog the command "Let's go" and start walking. Once your dog starts to pull, let out all the tension in the leash and go in the other direction.

When your dog gets to the end of the leash you'll be walking in the other direction. As your dog comes to your side quickly praise your dog and gather up the leash.

Step Three

When your dog gets to the end of the leash you'll be walking in the other direction. As your dog comes to your side quickly praise your dog and gather up the leash.

Step Four

If your dog starts to pull, let out the leash again and go in the other direction.

Things You'll Need

  • Some sour pet spray. You can get this at a pet store.

  • Your Hand

  • No fear of dogs

  • Steps

    Step One

Welcome to this article. You will learn how keep a dog from biting you and other things. Enjoy!!!!!

    Step Two

Ok the first step is to find out what the dog is biting. If it is biting you, then heres what you do. This may seem cruel but it is how most people I know do it. You must take your hand and put it in the dogs mouth. Yes, in the dogs mouth. I know that is completely against what your thinking but just do it. Then when the dog bites down put your pointer and your thumb at the corner of its mouth and push in. Now it is effectivly biting itself. This will, when done enough, stop it from biting people in fear of biting itself.

    Step Three

If your dog is biting things that you really don't want him/her to bite, then there is a few things you can do. One is that you can do the thing that is detailed above. Just do this whenever they start biting what you don't want them to bite. Or there is another thing. In some pet stores, but not all, there is a type of spray that you can spray on things. It has no odor, or if it does it is like apple or something. You spray this on whatever the dog is chewing on that you don't want it to. This has a very bad taste and will prevent the dog from chewing on it without having an extremely bad taste in there mouth. That is how you keep dogs from biting.
