It's been a busy year for the Washington Historical Society and its members.
Society member Pat Hallman has created a "Top 10" list of the society's achievements for 2006. Number 10 on the list is the celebration of the society's first annual George Washington Birthday Party in February. Appropriately, the event had a cherry theme with members enjoying such treats as brownies with cherries and cherry tarts. Members watched a video on Washington's life.
"We had fun doing it," Hallman said, adding that the society plans to do it again in 2007.
Number nine on the list is the creation of several new exhibits, including ones on the Statue of Liberty (created by Hallman), the American Bicentennial and George Washington portraits.
The eighth item on the list is the society's 29th annual Arts and Crafts Show held during Washington Township's Super Sunday in June while number seven is the society's two antique appraisal days.
At number six is the society's first annual Alumni Day held Sept. 10. The Washington Historical Museum was formerly a school from 1917 to 1972. For the Alumni Day, the society invited anyone who attended the school to come to the event and share their memories. Members were pleased with the turnout.
"We had 20 people show up," Hallman said.
A special bulletin board was created at the museum with photos of those who attended. Like the George Washington Birthday Party, the society plans to make the Alumni Day an annual event to be held the second Sunday of September.
"I bet it will be twice as big next year," Hallman said.
The fifth item on the Top Ten list is the society's joint meeting with the Friends of the Octagon House. During the meeting, a program was presented on octagon architecture, the history of the Andrus family and an update on the restoration of the Octagon House.
The creation of a self-guided tour booklet of the museum is number four. The book was created by member Sherrie Allen who went room by room, documenting the museum's many exhibits. One room is devoted entirely to scouting while another is devoted to military items and history.
The creation of genealogy files with information on local families is number three. The files are available for those interested. Hallman, a genealogist, said that the society created the files to satisfy an interest in the subject.
"Genealogy is a big thing," Hallman said.
Number two on the Top 10 list is the creation of the society's website: www.washhistsoc.org
Topping the list is Washington Historical Society President Jim Holcomb being selected as one of the Top 100 Volunteers of the Year by the Macomb County Board of Commissioners. He was honored for his service during a special dinner earlier this year and said he was surprised to be chosen.
"I did not know it was coming," Holcomb said.
Holcomb, who has served as president since 1975, and his wife, Jean, have been members for many years and spend a lot of their time working at the museum.
"We try to keep it moving, changing," Jean said of the museum and its exhibits.
For 2007, the society would like to establish an historic date plaque program for homes in the township. The society encourages township residents to research their homes, Hallman said.
"It's very much like doing genealogy," she said.
Members also hope to begin oral history interviews with longtime residents.
