How to do when losing your job?

Unfortunately, many people have lost their jobs in recent weeks and months.  With the demise of Lehman Brothers (at the beginning of this week), Bear Stearns earlier this year, the job reductions implemented at many financial institutions, and the knock-on impact on other businesses caused by increased joblessness, many people are finding themselves out of work and more job losses are likely to occur in the near term.

Tips to Survive it

  • Firstly, keep the panic at bay.
  • If you have been laid off, a steady pay Cheque at the end of the month is no more a possibility, so take a tab of your finances.
  • However, if you are only expecting a lay off as your company has started firing people in other departments and you could be next in line, you need to plan your finances meticulously.
  • Next important thing to do is to update your resume on all job sites.
  • Another interesting thing that many people opt for after a lay off is enhancing their qualifications and skill sets.

wuha wuha - 9 months ago
  1. First order of business is to acknowledge that a bad thing just happened to you.
  2. Critical to moving on is your understanding you didn’t do anything wrong.
  3. Baggage must be discarded to make a clean break and conduct excellent interviews with no bitterness, anger or criticism of the former employer.
  4. Buy a good bottle of champagne, prepare a picnic dinner for your significant other and go  to the park. Bundle up if you have to.
  5. Collect all the company trash and treasures, marketing materials and product data sheets you have amassed.
  6. Throw the works into a huge barbeque bonfire to illuminate your celebratory picnic.
  7. Toast the end of an era; shout all the anger and frustration into the fire, to say goodbye to your former employer as the flames disappear all traces of the old job.
  8. Next, toast to new beginnings.
