Top effective writing rules!

In our society, the study of language and literature is the domain of poets, novelists, and literary critics. Language is considered a decorative art, fit for entertainment and culture, but practically useless in comparison to the concrete sciences. Just look at the value of a college degree in English versus one in computer science or accounting.

  1. In science, you are what you write.  So, cavalier won’t do.
  2. Style (Strunk & White), Structure (RA Day), Spirit (Ramon y Cajal)
  3. Good writing cannot overcome bad science.
  4. Good science demands strong writing
  5. Use definite, specific, concrete language
  6. Use parallel construction for coordinate ideas
  7. Emphasis position of a sentence is the end
  8. Avoid sentences in loose succession;  instead use expectation: AB, BC, CD…..
  9. In grants, write as if reader is tired and may stop.
  10. Find a style that you like. Analyze it.  Emulate it.

  • Keep your word count under control.
  • Don't hedge.
  • Be on the lookout for language
  • Use active verb tense
  • Don't use passive verbs; they express impersonal events rather than committed actions, and they create distance with the reader.
  • Maintain an optimistic, positive tone.
  • Even if circumstances require that you deliver bad news, do so with optimism: there are problems, but we are solving them.
  • Structure your writing carefully.

George Orwell’s 6 Rules for Effective Writing

bookit bookit - 9 months ago

1. Never use a metaphor, simile, or other figure of speech which you are used to seeing in print.

2. Never use a long word where a short one will do.

3. If it is possible to cut a word out, always cut it out.

4. Never use the passive where you can use the active.

5. Never use a foreign phrase, a scientific word, or a jargon word if you can think of an everyday English equivalent.

6. Break any of these rules sooner than saying anything outright barbarous.
